One week after signing left-back Rogerio, VfL Wolfsburg have strengthened their defence once again by recruiting Joakim Maehle from Italian Serie A club Atalanta Bergamo. The full-back, who can play in a variety positions, signed a contract with the Wolves valid until 30 June 2027. The 26-year-old Denmark international will wear the number 21 jersey for the Green-and-Whites.

“His quality and experience will help the team”

“We’re very pleased that Joakim decided to join VfL Wolfsburg,” said VfL sporting director Sebastian Schindzielorz. “He’s a very experienced player and can operate on both flanks in the full-back position. His quality and experience will help the team and I’m sure we’ll have a lot of joy with him in the future.”

Experienced international

Maehle is the sixth summer signing at VfL, following the arrivals of Cedric Zesiger, Moritz Jenz, Vaclav Cerny, Tiago Tomas and Rogerio. He cut his teeth in the game in Denmark at Aalborg BK, and after a spell in Belgium at KRC Genk he ended up at Atalanta. He was a first-team regular there under head coach Gian Piero Gasperini, making 96 competitive games for the club, contributing six goals and seven assists. A compatriot of new VfL team-mate Jonas Wind, Maehle has recorded nine goals and six assists in 37 senior appearances for Denmark to date.

“I want to prove myself in the Bundesliga”

“The move to Wolfsburg and the Bundesliga is a challenge I’m really looking forward to,” said Maehle. “Over the last few years I’ve been able to gain an unbelievable amount of experience at the highest level in Serie A. Now I want to prove myself in the Bundesliga and I’ll do everything I can to settle into my new environment as quickly as possible.”
