“I know what’s important”

New VfL signing Lineth Beerensteyn looks forward to the clashes with her former club.

Lineth Beerensteyn wore the FC Bayern Munich shirt for five years – now the Dutch international is back in the Google Pixel Women’s Bundesliga after two seasons with Juventus. The 27-year-old forward has signed a two-year contract with VfL Wolfsburg. In this interview, Beerensteyn talks about her time in Italy and why she doesn’t have a favourite position.

Lineth Beerensteyn, how have your first few days at VfL Wolfsburg been?

Lineth Beerensteyn: “I’ve been very busy. New home, lots of formalities and visits to authorities – all the things that have to be done when you move to a new city. But I’ve enjoyed getting to know the team and the coaches, and being able to do the first training sessions.”

What are you most looking forward to?

Lineth: “The start of the season, for sure. A good pre-season is obviously necessary, but it’s not like I love the pre-season phase more than anything. I’m looking forward to the first competitive game. After all, it’s in the Supercup against FC Bayern Munich!”

Your former club, which you left for Juventus in 2022. What did you make of the differences between the Women’s Bundesliga and the Italian Serie A?

Lineth: “In my view, the biggest difference is that it’s more physical in the Bundesliga than in Italy. And you notice that Germany is a bit further ahead development-wise. The Bundesliga is more even. Juve and AS Roma are capable of competing in Europe, but behind them Italy isn’t as advanced. I’m intrigued by how this has developed in the last two years.”

What are your memories of meetings between Bayern and Wolfsburg?

Lineth: “They were really close, hard-fought and sometimes also crazy matches. Of course, emotions were always running high, there was a lot at stake. I know what’s important in games like this and I’m absolutely looking forward to experiencing it from the other side now.”

You’re comfortable in numerous positions in attack. Where do you feel most at home?

Lineth: “I don’t have a favourite position. It doesn’t matter to me whether I play through the middle or in the wide attacking positions. What’s more crucial is that we can rotate and swap positions during a match, which can cause problems for opposition defences.”

What are your ambitions for your first season in green and white?

Lineth: “Obviously, I want to win trophies with the team and play my part in that – be it with goals or assists.”
