In the last match before the international break, VfL Wolfsburg Women continued their winning streak in the Google Pixel Women’s Bundesliga. The She-Wolves were the dominant team throughout at Essen, particularly in terms of possession and attempts on goal, but failed to kill the game off early after Janina Minge’s first-half opener. Lineth Beerensteyn’s goal to make it 2-0 eventually sealed a hard-earned three points.
Deserved victory
Match summary
Tommy Stroot’s side were superior over the full 90 minutes at the Stadion an der Hafenstraße and applied pressure from the off, but Essen initially stood firm and restricted the spaces. Their resistance was broken in the 25th minute, when Minge headed in the deserved opening goal. The She-Wolves remained dominant in the second half while barely giving their opponents a sniff in defence. Beerensteyn wrapped up the fully deserved 2-0 win in the 72nd minute.
Goals
- 0-1 Minge (25’): There’s the lead for the She-Wolves! Minge is completely unmarked from Svenja Huth’s corner and although her header from close range is central, Vivien Endemann smartly blocks Sophia Winkler’s view, leaving the Essen goalkeeper without a chance.
- 0-2 Beerensteyn (72’): The pressure pays off! Huth runs with the ball at her feet towards the penalty box and plays a perfectly timed through ball into Beerensteyn. The Dutch international flicks the ball past Laura Pucks before firing into the bottom left corner. Nicely done!
We showed a very disciplined and mature performance. We let very little get past us, had a lot of control and dominance, and obviously we’re pleased with a fully deserved 2-0 win at Essen.Head coach Tommy Stroot
