The Stadion Oberwerth in Koblenz will host VfL Wolfsburg’s first competitive game of the 2024/25 season on Monday evening (18:00 CEST), as the Wolves take on fifth-tier TuS Koblenz in the first round of the DFB Cup.
Facts and figures on the game:
- Koblenz are already two games into their new league season. They beat Kaiserslautern’s second string 3-0 away from home in their opening match, only to lose 1-0 at home to Engers 07 in their next fixture. Koblenz travel to SV Viktoria Herxheim in their third clash of the campaign, just two days before the visit of VfL.
- No current member of Koblenz’s squad has ever played against the Wolves.
- While Monday’s tie is the Wolves’ 120th in the DFB Cup, Koblenz have played only 23 times in the competition. The first 11 of those came under the guise of TuS Neuendorf, Koblenz’s predecessor club.
- TuS and VfL are both represented on the list of former German Goal of the Year winners. Michael Stahl, Koblenz’s current player-coach, secured legendary status at the club with an astonishing strike from 61.5 metres in a DFB Cup game against Hertha BSC in 2010.
- Stahl succeeded former VfL striker Grafite as Goal of the Year winner. The Brazilian’s magnificent back-heeled effort against Bayern Munich went on to be shown around the world and became synonymous with the Wolves’ Bundesliga title triumph in 2009.
