Four weeks on from the end of the Olympic Games in Paris, VfL Wolfsburg’s athletes were officially honoured by mayor Dennis Weilmann. At a celebratory reception in Wolfsburg Castle, women’s football bronze medallists Jule Brand, Vivien Endemann, Merle Frohms, Marina Hegering, Kathrin Hendrich, Sarai Linder, Janina Minge and Alexandra Popp were recognised along with Kevin Paredes and sprinter Deniz Almas.
“Incredibly proud of you”
Mayor Weilmann, who is on the supervisory board of VfL, opened the event in the hunting hall of the castle, where the club’s managing directors Peter Christiansen and Dr Tim Schumacher were also in attendance, as well as women’s head coach Tommy Stroot. “As the sporting city of Wolfsburg, we’re incredibly proud of you,” said the head of the city. “The Olympic Games are something very special – a symbol of fairness, team spirit and hard work. As participants you embodied these values in every way. And I would like to congratulate all of you on your achievements.”
Paredes involved in three goals
The German women’s team won bronze at the 2024 Olympics with a 1-0 win over Spain. In the men’s tournament, Paredes was knocked out at the quarter-final stage with the USA after a 4-0 defeat by Morocco, but prior to that the VfL winger scored a brace against Guinea as well as setting up another goal against New Zealand in the group stage. Almas was part of the men’s 4x100 relay team.
