Captain puts pen to paper

Alexandra Popp signs an early extension to her contract with VfL Wolfsburg through to 2023.

VfL Women will be able to count on the services of Alexandra Popp for the next three seasons. The 29-year-old, who has been with the Green-and-Whites since 2012, has extended her contract with the five-time German champions until 30 June 2023. The 107-time Germany international was previously tied to the club until 2022. Popp has already turned out for VfL Wolfsburg 150 times in the FLYERALARM Women’s Bundesliga, coupled with 25 DFB Cup and 49 UEFA Women’s Champions League appearances. She has also been involved in every trophy that the She-Wolves have won, namely the Champions League (twice), the German league title (five times) and the DFB Cup (six times).

Popp was named one of three VfL captains at the start of the current season, along with Pernille Harder and Almuth Schult – a role that is familiar to her from her international duty, having been awarded the captaincy of the German national team in February 2019. Her greatest success with her country to date is gold at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.

“Recognition from the club”

“I feel absolutely at home in Wolfsburg and am delighted to have penned an early extension to my contract, which I see as a show of recognition from the club,” said Popp. “Since I joined VfL almost eight years ago, we’ve been building something big here and already had a lot of success. The professional working environment here combined with a genuine passion for football have given us the best possible conditions to continue on this journey over the coming years.”

She has been and will continue to be an integral part of our team, not just because of her unique qualities as a footballer but also because she is an absolute team player.
