While Lineth Beerensteyn was unable to take part in Sunday afternoon’s 3-1 win over Bayer 04 Leverkusen, the She-Wolves forward still had something to celebrate after the final whistle when she picked up her first kicker magazine award for the season’s top scorer.
Following nervously from the stands
The race ended up being an incredibly tight one. Hoffenheim’s Selina Cerci seemed determined to overhaul Beerensteyn, grabbing a hat-trick in her final match to end the season on 16 goals, putting her level with the VfL forward, who was keeping tabs on that match from her spot in the stands at the AOK Stadion. “I was sitting next to Poppi (Alexandra Popp), who was on her phone all the way through to see how the other match was going. She said, ‘Damn, she’s scoring a hatful today!” said Beerensteyn, who was much calmer when it came to her rival’s exploits, saying: “Things are always like that on the last day of the season.”
“Thank the team and the staff”
Beerensteyn was delighted to finish as the league’s top scorer for the first time in her career. “This award means a lot to me,” she said. “It shows how hard I worked throughout the season, but I certainly couldn’t have done it alone, and I’d really like to thank the team and the staff!” She also had a thought for her late mother, particularly with Sunday being Mother’s Day. “She’s up there watching over me always,” she said, on what was an emotional day for a number of reasons. “The win and the departures [of several players] made it a special occasion. That’s the way it was meant to be!”
