Wolves progress

VfL Wolfsburg beat TuS Koblenz 1-0 to reach the second round of the DFB Cup.

VfL Wolfsburg have won their first competitive match of the new season, producing a dominant display to beat TuS Koblenz 1-0 in the first round of the DFB Cup on Monday evening. Patrick Wimmer (15’) got the goal for Ralph HasenhĂŒttl’s side in front of 9,447 fans at the Stadion Oberwerth.

The Wolves will discover their second-round opponents on Sunday 1 September, with ties taking place on 29 and 30 October.

HasenhĂŒttl’s men are back in action on Sunday 25 August, when they host record champions Bayern Munich at a sold-out Volkswagen Arena in their opening Bundesliga game of the campaign.

Goal

  • 0-1 Wimmer (15’): A second VfL corner in quick succession leads to the opening goal – and the Wolves’ first effort of the 2024/25 campaign – as Wimmer nods home from point-blank range, right in front of the Koblenz goalkeeper.

Reaction

Ralph HasenhĂŒttl: “It was a typical cup match, with an underdog who raised their game and a higher-quality team who didn’t reach their full potential. We started very well, scored the first goal and had chances to get a second before half-time, against opponents who defended with passion and gave us little space. We did well enough after the break, but if you don’t score the second goal your opponents keep hoping until the end. It wasn’t easy on that pitch, but I still expect more from my team. That said, we’re obviously delighted to be in the next round.”

Michael Stahl: “I don’t feel any disappointment at all. I told the lads before the game that it’s all about believing until the last moment, without thinking about the result. That’s just the type of performance we delivered. When I look back on this special evening one day, I’ll do so with a smile. That’s why I’m going home a happy man. I don’t want to speak about the game too much – everyone saw it, after all. On behalf of my team, I can only thank everyone who helped make this wonderful night possible.”
