Wolves fight back in hard-fought friendly

VfL recovered from 2-0 down to beat SC Freiburg 3-2.

VfL Wolfsburg beat Bundesliga rivals SC Freiburg 3-2 on Saturday in their second pre-season friendly ahead of the 2023/24 campaign. In a game split into two 60-minute halves, goals from Maximilian Breunig (22’) and Mika Baur (66’) put Freiburg ahead before efforts from Maximilian Philipp (76’), Lukas Nmecha (penalty, 78’) and Tiago Tomas (87’) earned the Wolves a comeback victory. 

Niko Kovac’s side are back in action on home soil next Saturday (29 July) when they host French runners-up RC Lens at the AOK Stadion. That game kicks off at 15:00 CEST.

“Must improve in several areas”

VfL head coach Niko Kovac: “You could tell that both teams are in the middle of pre-season. We’ve worked on a lot of things in the last two weeks, some of which were on display today. But it was also clear that we must – and can – do a lot better in several areas. We’re lacking energy at the moment, but we still have three to four weeks before things really get going.”
