Win to kick off UWCL campaign

VfL Women win their European opener 4-0 against SKN St. Pölten.

The opening group game of this season’s UEFA Women`s Champions League went the way of the She-Wolves, with Tommy Stroot’s team cruising past seven-time Austrian league-winners SKN St. Pölten 4-0 at home at the AOK Stadion. The goals from the Green-and-Whites came from an Ewa Pajor brace (8’, 15’), Lena Lattwein (56’) and Jill Roord (89’).

The She-Wolves will be back in action this Sunday, 23 October, at home to Bayern Munich (kick-off in the Volkswagen Arena at 14:00 CEST).

Goals

  • 1-0 Pajor (8th minute): A shot from Roord is blocked by Jennifer Klein and lands in the path of Pajor, who needs no second bidding to open the scoring.

  • 2-0 Pajor (15’): Two for Pajor, two for VfL! This is a great finish after an equally good lay-off courtesy of Jonsdottir’s header. The Polish forward then chips the ball coolly over SKN goalkeeper Carina Schlüter.

  • 3-0 Lattwein (56’): 3-0 – this time Lattwein is the scorer.

  • 4-0 Roord (89’): Roord finds herself unmarked and pulls the trigger from just outside the box. Her low, flat strike is perfectly directed and finds its way into the back of the net just inside the left-hand post.

Reaction

Tommy Stroot: “If someone had told us before kick-off that we’d win the match 4-0, I think we’d have signed up for that. The main advantage for us was that we made it 3-0 quite early on, meaning that we could manage the game and that let us make our substitutions relatively early. That’s an important factor, and it will be in all the matches that we play in the future. And at the end of the day we deserved the 4-0 win – we earned it, so I’m happy with the way things went.”
