Wedemeyer extends contract

Defender pens new deal through to 2022.

Joelle Wedemeyer is in her tenth season already with the Green-and-Whites, and it certainly will not be the last. The 24-year-old has signed an early extension to her contract – that was due to run out at the end of the season – to keep her at VfL Wolfsburg through to 30 June 2022. Wedemeyer joined the club in 2011 from MTV Wolfenbüttel and made the move up to the first-team squad in 2013. She has gone on to make 42 Women’s Bundesliga appearances as well as another nine in the DFB Cup and no fewer than 16 in the UEFA Women’s Champions League. The defender has picked up 12 trophies in her time with VfL Women and in 2014, she was part of the Germany team that won the U-20 Women’s World Cup.

“Want to become one of the first names on the team-sheet”

“I’m delighted that I will be playing with VfL Wolfsburg next season as well and get to battle it out for more trophies with the club,” said Wedemeyer. “Last year, I think that I really came on in terms of my game and took it to the next level. I want to carry on where I left off and become one of the first names on the team-sheet. VfL is the best place for me to achieve my ambitions as a footballer, and I’d like to thank those in charge at the club for the trust that they’ve shown me.“

“Never allowed herself to be knocked off course”

“It is absolutely amazing to see how Joelle has progressed in the last few years, from a youth player to  becoming one of the lynchpins of our squad,” said Ralf Kellermann, Sporting director of VfL Women. “She has always risen to the challenge of competition for places and seen that as a positive, and never allowed herself to be knocked off course – and this is why I’m so pleased that Joelle continues to see her future with us here at VfL Wolfsburg!“
