“We can make history”

Stephan Lerch and Dominique Janssen spoke to the press ahead of the UWCL final against Lyon.

The title is within touching distance… In just a few hours’ time this Sunday, at 20:00 CEST, the She-Wolves will kick off their UEFA Women´s Champions League final against Olympique Lyonnais, with the most prestigious trophy in European women’s club football up for grabs. At the press conference ahead of the match, head coach Stephan Lerch and defender Dominique Janssen answered questions from the international media. Lerch spoke about …

…the state of the team: “The atmosphere in the camp is good and we’re really looking forward to the final. The players are itching to get out there and take on Lyon. All of them are fit and available for selection.”

…how they are approaching the final: “At the end of the day, we need to have a perfect day and put in an absolutely faultless performance if we’re going to beat a top team like that. We know what our strengths are, though.”

…what winning the title would mean: “The Champions League is the ultimate club competition in Europe and it’s already quite special that we’re in the final. It took a lot of hard work in some very unusual circumstances and with not a lot of time to prepare, so we’re really pleased to have got this far. But we still want to achieve more. If we were to win the final, it would be an incredible dream come true. We can make history.”

Janssen meanwhile spoke about…

…the tension ahead of the final: “It’s more a case of anticipation than tension. I’m really looking forward to the match – it’s great to be in another final, as that’s what you play football for. I’m really up for it and can hardly wait until kick-off.”

…who the favourites are: “Lyon have won the trophy four years running so I think that that makes them the favourites. We’re in good form, though, and we feel we can beat them – that’s what we’re aiming for, after all!”
