“We can be satisfied with the draw”

Lena Goeßling on the DFB Cup quarter-final match-up with her former club FSV Gütersloh 2009.

The quarter-finals of the DFB Cup have drawn defending champions VfL away to second-division side FSV Gütersloh 2009. The match is set to be played on either 21 or 22 March, with the kick-off time to be determined in the coming days. Lena Goeßling knows the She-Wolves’ opponents well, having played for them up until 2006 in their previous incarnation of FC Gütersloh 2000.

Lena, the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup will see the She-Wolves travel to FSV Gütersloh 2009. That will almost be a home match for you…

Lena Goeßling: “Yes, some of my friends from Bielefeld have already been in touch. But I wouldn’t describe it as a home match. My Gütersloh days are a good few years behind me now and plenty has changed since then. I do know the manager, Michael Horstkötter, from back then though.”

What do you think of the draw in purely sporting terms?

Goeßling: “We’d obviously have preferred a home tie but I think that we can be very satisfied with the draw. Having got past a big name in the Round of 16 when we had to face FC Bayern Munich, we now have to make sure we win this one good and proper and make it into the semi-finals.”

The match is likely to be played in the Tönnies-Arena on an artificial pitch. How important will that be?

Goeßling: “There is a real difference when it comes to playing on artificial turf. The ball moves differently and everything is a little quicker. I personally prefer playing on grass but I think that at the end of the day, it shouldn’t be a factor. We’re favourites and we’re going to make sure that we play like that, whatever the surface!”
