Vital away win

Clinical Wolves overcome Bochum 3-1.

VfL Wolfsburg clinched their second away win of the season after battling to a 3-1 success at VfL Bochum. The Wolves were solid at the back and clinical going forward on the counter, with goals from Tiago Tomas (21’) and Jonas Wind (37’, 88’) sealing the points, while Myron Boadu was on target for the hosts.

Goals

  • 0-1 Tiago Tomas (21’): VfL intercept a long ball forward from Bochum’s Felix Passlack. It is worked to Mohammed Amoura, who crosses low into the penalty area from the left for Tiago Tomas, who finishes from 12 yards out with his left foot.

  • 0-2 Jonas Wind (37’): Bochum only half clear a Maximilian Arnold corner. The ball falls to Amoura, lurking on the edge of the area, and he neatly finds Wind in the six-yard box to bury the opportunity in eye-catching style.

  • 1-2 Myron Boadu (72’): Substitute Moritz Broschinski crosses from the right to the back post, where Boadu finishes from close range.

  • 1-3 Jonas Wind (88’): VfL are awarded a penalty following a VAR review for a foul by Ibrahima Sissoko on Amoura. Former Wolfsburg goalkeeper Patrick Drewes saves Wind’s initial spot-kick but is powerless to keep out the Dane’s effort on the rebound.

Reaction

Ralph Hasenhüttl: “Obviously we’re very pleased with the three points and also with long stretches of the game. It’s never easy to get points here because there’s such an incredible energy in the stadium. You have to be prepared for Bochum’s pressing because they’re a team that put you under a lot of pressure and cover a lot of ground. With that in mind, we wanted to minimise the risk in our own half and we didn’t have that much possession. Having said that, we regularly managed to get behind their defence with our two forwards, which was part of our game plan. We could have put the game to bed a lot earlier in the second half. And then it’s like it often is in football: they get a goal back and the whole stadium wakes up. For that reason I have to give credit to the substitutes today because they won us the game to a certain extent.”

Peter Zeidler: “We expected Wolfsburg to try and get around our pressing by playing lots of long balls forward and to rely on the pace of their attackers. We conceded the opening goal immediately after we had a penalty disallowed – that was the first time we weren’t able to get to grips with the speed of their forwards. That came as something of a shock, but the team recovered quickly. With us 2-0 down at half-time, the boys’ heads were hanging, and it wasn’t easy to pick them up again. However, the lads managed to do that with our support. We then got into the game and deservedly pulled a goal back. Of course, we would have liked that spell to have continued until the end and for us to have equalised. It was very difficult after they made it 3-1. We have to congratulate Wolfsburg and give them credit for a good performance.”
