Victory in friendly

VfL Women beat FC Twente 2-1 in a warm-up match in Portugal.

Following some intensive training sessions at the camp in the Algarve, VfL Wolfsburg Women earned a victory in their first friendly match of their winter preparations thanks to a 2-1 triumph over Dutch top-flight club FC Twente on Monday.

Lynn Wilms and Ariana Arias got the goals for Tommy Stroot’s side in a match split into four 25-minute quarters at the She-Wolves’ training complex in Almancil.

The Green-and-Whites’ last friendly prior to resuming competitive action will be against BK Häcken at the AOK Stadion in Wolfsburg on Saturday 25 January (kick-off 14:00 CET).

Goals

  • 1-0 Wilms (31’): Sveindis Jonsdottir is brought down inside the box and VfL are awarded a penalty. Fiene Bussmann saves Wilms’ initial effort but is powerless to stop her tucking in the rebound.
  • 2-0 Arias (65’): Another goal on the rebound – not from a penalty this time though. After Lineth Beerensteyn’s shot is blocked, Arias is in the right place to double VfL’s advantage.
  • 2-1 Verdaasdonk (69’): Suus Verdaasdonk rises highest at the back post to meet a corner and leave Merle Frohms no chance.

Reaction

Tommy Stroot: “Given how much we’ve been training here in Portugal, I’m satisfied with the result, the game and also the past few days of our training camp.”
