Die Spielerinnen des VfL Wolfsburg jubeln.

VfL Wolfsburg Women continued their winning run at the start of the second half of the FLYERALARM Women’s Bundesliga season with a 3-0 success at SGS Essen. The result means the league leaders maintain their lead over closest pursuers Bayern Munich, who edged third-placed Eintracht Frankfurt 2-1.

Alexandra Popp, Sveindis Jonsdottir and Marina Hegering got the goals in front of 3,389 fans at the Stadion an der Hafenstraße. The She-Wolves’ second game after the winter break was also their last league fixture in February: national team players will join up with their countries for training camps and friendlies over the next 10 days.

The Green-and-Whites return to action away to 1. FC Köln in the DFB Cup quarter-finals on Tuesday 28 February (kick-off: 18:00 CET) as they bid to retain their title.

Reaction

Tommy Stroot: “We had to adapt to the difficult pitch conditions. It was important for us to win the match. We needed to be patient against a deep-lying Essen side, and we were rewarded for our patience. I’m very satisfied with both the game and the result.”
