Victory in Bremen

The She-Wolves scored twice in the opening nine minutes en route to winning their last league game of 2024.

VfL Wolfsburg Women earned a 3-1 away win over SV Werder Bremen in their last Google Pixel Women’s Bundesliga match of the calendar year in a fixture that also marked the start of the second half of the season. The result sets the stage for the Green-and-Whites’ final game of 2024 on Tuesday, when they travel to Olympique Lyon in the UEFA Women’s Champions League (kick-off 21:00 CET). After a lively opening in Bremen, in which Lineth Beerensteyn struck twice, the tempo of the game dropped off somewhat. In the second half, a dominant VfL side sealed the points thanks to a goal from Jule Brand.

Goals

  • 0-1 Beerensteyn (6’): Werder goalkeeper Livia Peng makes a save but Beerensteyn is well placed to tuck in the rebound for her eighth goal of the season.

  • 1-1 Schmidt (8’): Lynn Wilms inadvertently clears the ball to Lara Schmidt and then deflects the Bremen player’s shot into the net.

  • 1-2 Beerensteyn (9’): What a start! Beerensteyn gets her brace but Lena Lattwein is the architect of the goal, playing a brilliant pass from the halfway line right into the path of the scorer. Beerensteyn drives forward, beats Peng and slots into the net.

  • 1-3 Brand (55’): Brand makes space for herself to get on the end of a corner from Svenja Huth and nods in VfL’s third goal.

Kathy Hendrich, who made her 300th Bundesliga appearance against Bremen: “We knew it would be a difficult game but we faced the challenge head on. It probably wasn’t our best game but the most important thing is that we picked up all three points in our last league match of 2024, and deservedly so.”
