VfL Wolfsburg Women have taken a big step towards qualifying for the semi-finals of the UEFA Women’s Champions League. In their quarter-final first leg, head coach Tommy Stroot’s team defeated Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 in the French capital on Wednesday evening. In a match that was as tight as everyone had forecast, Dominique Janssen scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot just past the hour mark.

The decisive second leg comes next Thursday, 30 March (kick-off at 18.45 CEST), with VfL Women taking their one-goal advantage home to the Volkswagen Arena.

Goal

  • 0-1 Janssen (62’, penalty): Drama at the Parc des Princes! Lena Oberdorf’s header is stopped by Elisa De Almeida’s hand in the penalty area. After consulting VAR, the referee points to the penalty spot. Janssen steps up, holds her nerve and guides the ball into the back of the net.

Reaction

Tommy Stroot: “I’m very pleased with the result and above all, the fact that we’re taking a lead into the return leg. We could have dominated play more once they were down to ten, but at the same time, Paris were very aggressive and brave going forward at that stage. We’re happy that we’ve got a 1-0 lead and we’re looking forward to the return leg.”
