VfL Wolfsburg Women returned from the international break with a 3-0 home win over SC Freiburg in the Google Pixel Women’s Bundesliga on Sunday evening. Some 2,803 fans braved wintery temperatures at the AOK Stadion to watch the Green-and-Whites produce a good first-half display in which fine goals from Svenja Huth (17’) and Alexandra Popp (44’) put them in front at the break.
Lineth Beerensteyn added to VfL’s lead early in the second half (51’) and although Tommy Stroot’s side had plenty of further chances to increase the scoreline, they were unable to do so.
The She-Wolves have a complete squad available and a full week of training to prepare for their next outing, away to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim on Saturday (kick-off 12:00 CET).
Goals
- 1-0 Huth (17’): A wonderful goal! Beerensteyn dribbles towards the Freiburg penalty area, dances past two defenders and tees it up for Huth to finish off.
- 2-0 Popp (44’): The She-Wolves double their lead following a superb counter-attack. Marina Hegering, in her own half, spreads the ball wide to Jule Brandt on the left. She skips past Greta Stegemann and crosses for Popp to make it 2-0.
- 3-0 Beerensteyn (51’): Janina Minge drives forward from the halfway line and finds Beerensteyn, who buries a brilliant effort into the top corner.
Tommy Stroot: “A 3-0 win and a fourth straight clean sheet in the Google Pixel Women’s Bundesliga are very pleasing statistics because they show how consistent we are. The number of chances we created, and the way we created them, was really good. Overall it was a commanding win.”
