VfL Women reach DFB Cup final

She-Wolves win 5-0 at Bayern Munich in semi-final.

Die Spielerinnen des VfL Wolfsburg jubeln gemeinsam nach einem Treffer.

VfL Wolfsburg Women are unstoppable in the DFB Cup, and they made quite the statement in their semi-final tie away to Bayern Munich on Saturday with a 5-0 victory against their fiercest domestic rivals. As such, the She-Wolves will aim to lift the trophy for a 10th time in the final on 18 May in Cologne.

Three weeks after their 1-0 FLYERALARM Women's Bundesliga defeat against Bayern, VfL got a measure of revenge thanks to a brace from Sveindis Jonsdottir as well as efforts from Ewa Pajor, Jule Brand and Dominique Janssen.

Goals

  • 0-1 Jonsdottir (19th minute): Jill Roord plays a perfectly timed ball into the path of Jonsdottir. The Icelandic midfielder doesn't think twice and unleashes a left-footed strike into the far corner.

  • 0-2 Grohs o.g. (44th minute): Jonsdottir is involved again as she launches one of her inimitable throw-ins. Pajor's header hits the post and ricochets onto the calf of Bayern goalkeeper Maria-Luisa Grohs and over the line. Unfortunate for the custodian, no doubt, but no complaints from VfL!

  • 0-3 Jonsdottir (47th minute): Roord again plays in Jonsdottir, who drives past Tuva Hansen and clinically finishes with her right foot.

  • 0-4 Brand (56th minute): Brand fends off the challenge of Georgia Stanway and smashes the ball into the net.

  • 0-5 Janssen (pen. 60th minute): After a shot from Pajor, the ball hits Hansen's hand. It's a clear penalty and Janssen makes no mistake from the spot, firing into the left-hand corner.

Reaction

Tommy Stroot: "I'm very pleased. I really liked the way my team performed. It was important to make it 2-0 before half-time. We were on fire today and were clinical in front of goal. We had the necessary aggression and are deservedly in the final, which we obviously want to win."
