VfL Women into the semis

4-0 win away to 1. FC Köln in DFB Cup quarter-final

Die Wölfinnen jubeln und umarmen sich auf dem Spielfeld.

VfL Wolfsburg Women are through to their ninth consecutive semi-final of the DFB Cup, with the defending champions seeing off fellow Women’s Bundesliga side 1. FC Köln 4-0 (2-0), extending their unbeaten run in this competition to 43 matches.

The goals came from Ewa Pajor, Svenja Huth, Marina Hegering and Jule Brand, with the She-Wolves now only one match away from returning to Cologne on 18 May for the final. In the meantime, the semi-final draw will be made on Sunday 5 March.

Goals

  • 1-0 Pajor (25th minute):  Sveindis Jonsdottir gets the better of Sharon Beck in her own half of the pitch before sending out a stunning pass to Pajor. The striker glides past Sarah Puntigam and fires home through the legs of FC keeper Manon Klett.

  • 2-0 Huth (42nd minute): VfL double their lead and again, the assist is as good as the goal itself. This time it is Jonsdottir who beats a handful of players out on the left wing before floating over a cross which Klett can only parry, into the path of Huth who needs no second bidding.

  • 3-0 Hegering (66th minute): What a strike from 30 yards out! Hegering picks up the ball, and within seconds it is nestling in the back of the net – the kind of shot that ARD will be looking at when it comes to “Goal of the Month”.

  • 4-0 Brand (88th minute): What a move, almost the length of the pitch! From inside her own half, Huth finds Rebecka Blomqvist down the left flank, and the substitute fires it across to Brand who slots home from close range to put the icing on the cake.
