For the last 10 years the German women’s title has either gone to Munich or Wolfsburg – and the rivalry has not lost any of its shine over the last decade.
Now, however, VfL Wolfsburg Women and Bayern Munich will lock horns at the Volkswagen Arena for the first time ever when they meet on Sunday 23 October (kick-off 14:00 CEST), with approximately 20,000 fans expected to attend. The She-Wolves currently sit at the top of the table, two points clear of their fiercest rivals.
At his pre-match press conference, head coach Tommy Stroot discussed…
… team news:Tabea Waßmuth, Katarzyna Kiedrzynek and Marina Hegering will all miss out.”
… his expectations of the summit meeting: “We know it will be an even match but we won’t know exactly what Bayern’s approach will be until we’ve kicked off. With that in mind, we’ll need to be prepared for a lot of things. We’re aware of the quality they have and that it’s a top-class game in the Women’s Bundesliga. That’s how we’re going into it. These matches are often tight affairs.”
… the expected large crowd: “I’m really looking forward to it and we’re happy that we were able to play two games in this stadium last season too. So we’re going into situations we already know, and that will help us. The fact that we’re also getting these kinds of spectator figures in the league is special and underlines the fantastic development in women’s football overall, and in Germany too.”
… the 6-0 win in the last home game against Bayern: “That match was very much an exception because we know it was a special situation given that Bayern were missing a lot of players due to coronavirus infections. We’re in a new season now. If they see things differently, that’s a question for them to answer.”
