Toothless Wolves beaten

VfL suffered a 1-0 defeat at FC Augsburg.

VfL Wolfsburg’s seven-match unbeaten run in the Bundesliga ended with a 1-0 reverse at Augsburg on Saturday afternoon. In a match that was low on chances, the home side took their first opportunity soon after the break through Phillip Tietz (53’) and comfortably protected their lead. Augsburg controlled the game for large parts and hardly allowed the Green-and-Whites to get going. It was only in the closing stages that VfL began to threaten more but Augsburg goalkeeper Finn Dahmen kept yet another clean sheet, making it 614 minutes without conceding a goal.

Following Matchday 26, the Bundesliga pauses for the international break. The Wolves return to day-to-day business on Saturday 29 March, when 1. FC Heidenheim visit the Volkswagen Arena (15:30 CET).

Goal

  • 1-0 Phillip Tietz (53’): Denis Vavro misjudges a long ball to Tietz, leaving the striker one-on-one in front of Wolfsburg keeper Kamil Grabara, and he strikes to score the only goal.

Reaction

Ralph Hasenhüttl: “It was the tight match we expected, which was decided by one moment where we switched off. We didn’t defend well in that situation. Otherwise we didn’t give away many chances but that was too simple. We tried everything in the last 15 minutes. In the reverse fixture we were able to equalise – not this time. The chance was certainly there but in the end it wasn’t enough to get anything here.”

Jess Thorup: “Ten matches without defeat, we’re pleased about that. It was a tight match today, in which neither side gave much away. We didn’t really get into the game in the first 20 minutes but after that we were the better team and got the goal after the break. We retreated too much in the last 10 minutes, but at the moment we’re also getting the luck we need. Three points before the international break – there’s nothing better.”
