Title race blown open

VfL Women beat SC Freiburg 3-2 to close the gap on Bundesliga leaders Bayern.

Matchday 18 of the FLYERALARM Women’s Bundesliga could not have gone much better from VfL Women’s point of view. The 2019/20 double winners recovered from an early setback to beat SC Freiburg 3-2 thanks to Ewa Pajor’s brace and a goal from Svenja Huth. The win closes the gap to league leaders FC Bayern Munich, who have held a five-point cushion over the She-Wolves since November, to just two points.

Bayern’s 3-2 loss against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim on Saturday evening means VfL’s title defence is back in their own hands. The Green-and-Whites were sponsored by ID.4 for the first time against Freiburg, with the logo of the fully electric compact SUV replacing the Volkswagen emblem on their shirts.

VfL’s next game takes them to bottom-of-the-table MSV Duisburg on Sunday 25 April (kick-off 14:00 CEST).

“Unnecessarily tense”

VfL head coach Stephan Lerch: “Our heart rates rose again today, particularly in the final stages. We had a lot of chances to win by a bigger margin. After going 3-1 up you think you’ve broken Freiburg’s great resolve – then we handed them another gift. Even after that we still had chances to seal the win, so it was unnecessarily tense. We were desperate to get the three points and we managed to do that.”
