There were four Wolves in action with their respective national teams on Thursday and Friday, claiming predominantly positive results. While Yunus Malli, Landry Dimata and Phillip Menzel were in friendly action, Josip Brekalo and the Croatia U21s suffered a European Championship qualifying defeat.

Malli’s joy

VfL midfielder Malli and the Turkish national team, who didn’t manage to qualify for the World Cup, notched up a 1-0 win over Ireland on Friday evening. Malli was introduced as a 69th-minute substitute in Antalya. On Tuesday, March 27th, the Turks play their next friendly in Montenegro.

Testing times for Brekalo’s Croatians

Wolves winger Brekalo played the full 90 minutes on Friday as the Croatia U21s suffered a 2-1 defeat in the Czech Republic in their European Under-21 Championship qualifier. David Lischka (13‘) and Filip Hasek (71‘) were on target for the hosts either side of Duje Caleta-Car’s equaliser (62’). On Tuesday Croatia play host to outsiders Moldova and need a win to keep up the pressure on group leaders Greece.

Victory for Dimata

On Thursday, Landry Dimata was involved in Belgium U21s’ friendly against the Netherlands. The VfL man came on in the 72nd minute with his side leading 3-1. It finished 4-1 to the Belgians.

Menzel watches on from the bench

The Germany U20 team were participating in the U20 Elite League in Portugal and came away with a 1-0 victory. Wolfsburg‘s goalkeeping talent Phillip Menzel watched on from the bench for the duration and saw Hoffenheim’s Robin Hack net the decisive goal (77’). The German youngsters are next in action on Tuesday when Poland will be their opponents in Gütersloh (kick-off 18:00 CET).
