VfL Wolfsburg put on quite the spectacle away at UEFA Champions League participants RB Leipzig on Saturday afternoon, coming away with a 5-1 triumph after an impressive team performance.
A Mohammed Amoura brace (4’,16’) and a strike from Tiago Tomas (5’) set the Green-and-Whites on course for victory early on in front of 44,000 fans at the Red-Bull-Arena, with second-half efforts from Joakim Maehle (64’) and Kevin Behrens (90’+1) sealing the points. The tremendous result lifts the Wolves up to seventh in the standings.
Goals
0-1 Amoura (4’): VfL attack at pace and Tomas back-heels the ball to Patrick Wimmer, who feeds it into Ridle Baku. His cross into the middle finds the onrushing Amoura, who finishes from close range. A wonderful goal!
0-2: Tomas (5’): What is going on? Tomas is given space in a central position just outside the area and his shot takes a deflection off Kevin Kampl before flying into the net!
0-3 Amoura (16’): Incredible stuff! Bence Dardai flicks the ball to Amoura on the right and he darts forward and beats Peter Gulasci from a tight angle to score his first Bundesliga brace.
0-4 Maehle (64’): Konstantinos Koulierakis flicks on a corner with his head and the ball comes to Maehle, who nods it into the net.
1-4 Orban (82’): Kamil Grabara keeps out a free-kick, parrying the ball onto the post, but Willi Orban is well placed to tap the rebound in for a consolation.
1-5: Behrens (90’+1): The Wolves have the final say as Behrens applies the finishing touch to one of several counter-attacks.
Reaction
Ralph Hasenhüttl: “As you can imagine, we’re delighted with the team’s performance. We did a lot of things right from the very start. We were hungry, extremely motivated and we wanted to be a very awkward team to play against. We did exactly that. It’s no coincidence that we’ve picked up so many points away from home. We’ve got a lot of quality on the counter, and we showed that again today. Despite our lead it was important to stay focused in the second half. We could have scored our decisive fourth goal a lot earlier. But ultimately it was a top-class performance that makes me very proud.”
Marco Rose: “We had big plans for this game but quickly saw that we didn’t go into the tackles in the way that we needed to and that was necessary. Conceding a deflected goal so soon after they scored the first one did something to us. You could feel our insecurity. We made too many simple mistakes and had to be careful not to completely collapse. That all led to Wolfsburg’s goals and the margin of victory.”
