VfL Wolfsburg drew 1-1 in a friendly with last season’s Ligue 1 runners-up RC Lens in front of a crowd of around 2,700 fans on Saturday afternoon. Ridle Baku gave the Green-and-Whites the lead in the 76th minute, only for Deiven Machado to equalise five minutes later.

The Wolves head off to their second training camp of the summer on Monday 31 July, with Niko Kovac’s charges to be based in Donaueschingen until 4 August as they fine-tune their preparations for the new season. Another friendly, this time against Spezia Calcio, has been planned for Wednesday 2 August. The match is due to kick-off at 17:00 CEST at the MS Technologie-Arena in Villingen-Schwenningen, approximately 20 kilometres from the VfL camp.

“Mixed feelings”

VfL head coach Niko Kovac: “I think it was a good test for us today – we were playing against Lens after all. They’ve got a very good team, even though they’ve lost two important players. Having said that, we could also see that we’ve still got work to do in a few areas because we’re defending a little bit differently to the way we did last season. I was happier with our performance in the second half than I was with our first-half display, where we didn’t get close to their goal at all. So overall I’ve got mixed feelings. I wasn’t happy with the first half, but the second half was better.”

VfL Wolfsburg – First half: Casteels – Franjic, van de Ven, Bornauw, Fischer – Arnold – Ambros, Pejcinovic – Tomas, Cerny – Wind

VfL Wolfsburg – Second half: Schulze – Kaminski, Lacroix, Zesiger, Cozza – Vranckx – Gerhardt, Svanberg – Baku, Wimmer – Nmecha

Goals: 1-0 Baku (76‘), 1-1 Machado (81‘)
