She-Wolves sign gifted youngster

Germany international Lena Oberdorf has agreed a three-year contract with VfL Women through to 2023.

Following the signings of Pauline Bremer and Katarzyna Kiedrzynek, VfL Wolfsburg Women have recruited another newcomer in Lena Oberdorf, who has penned a deal valid until 30 June 2023 with the five-time German champions.

The 18-year-old, who can play in several positions across the backline and in midfield, arrives from SGS Essen and will wear the number five shirt. Oberdorf has already made 31 appearances for Essen in the FLYERALARM Women’s Bundesliga, as well as another four in the DFB Cup.

In April 2019 she earned the first of 13 senior international caps to date for Germany, a tally that includes four at the Women’s World Cup 2019 in France. Her biggest career achievement so far was winning the U17 European Championship in 2017, where she also received the Player of the Tournament award.

“Exactly the right club”

“I’m absolutely convinced that the top-quality squad and fantastic facilities make VfL Wolfsburg exactly the right club for me to develop over the next few years, and of course to win titles too,” Oberdorf said. “I’m especially looking forward to playing in Europe with VfL and gaining experience in the Champions League.”

“Lena is one of the brightest young talents in the women’s game anywhere in the world, which makes us all the happier that she’s chosen to commit her future to VfL Wolfsburg,” said VfL Women sporting director Ralf Kellermann. “She played at the World Cup in France when she was just 17, and already has great experience for her age in the league. On top of that, she can play in a number of positions in defence and midfield. Her footballing qualities and unflappable style of play will make her a real asset for us.”
