She-Wolves overpower Frankfurt

VfL Women beat Eintracht Frankfurt 6-1 in their top-of-the-table encounter at the Volkswagen Arena.

VfL Wolfsburg Women delivered an emphatic response to their frustrating DFB Cup exit in midweek, producing a magnificent performance to beat Eintracht Frankfurt 6-1 at the Volkswagen Arena and move level on points with the Eagles in the Google Pixel Women’s Bundesliga after Matchday 15.

The visitors were completely overwhelmed by the She-Wolves’ ruthless and clinical attack in the first half, Alexandra Popp giving the home side the lead after just three minutes before Lineth Beerensteyn added a second five minutes later. Penalties from Janine Minge (28’) and Lena Lattwein (45’+1) made it 4-0, before Pia-Sophie Wolter put through her own net (45’+7) to give VfL a 5-0 lead at the break.

Vivien Endemann scored the She-Wolves’ sixth on the hour-mark, with Carlotta Wamser’s effort five minutes from time nothing more than a consolation for the visitors. VfL, who head into the upcoming international break on a major high, return to action with a trip to RB Leipzig at 14:00 CET on Saturday 8 March.

Goals

  • 1-0 Popp (3’): Lynn Wilms swings a cross into the penalty area from the right-hand side and the unmarked Popp sends a firm header into the net to open the scoring.

  • 2-0 Beerensteyn (8’): Sarai Linder plays a wonderful ball into Beerensteyn, who steers a well-placed shot into the top right-hand corner.

  • 3-0 Minge (pen. 28’): Former She-Wolves player Wolter is penalised for blocking the ball with her arm and Minge converts from the spot to make it three.

  • 4-0 Lattwein (pen. 45’+1): Nina Lührßen brings down Endemann inside the area. This time Lattwein steps up, firing an unstoppable effort into the net.

  • 5-0 Wolter (45’+7, own goal): Wolter sends the ball into her own net in an attempt to clear the ball under pressure from Beerensteyn.

  • 6-0 Endemann (60’): Popp sends Beerensteyn racing clear down the left. The Dutch international carries the ball down the wing before cutting it back for Endemann, who finishes confidently.

  • 6-1 Wamser (85’): Wamser prods home from Lara Prasnikar’s cross to score a consolation for Frankfurt.

Head coach Tommy Stroot: “We wanted to show everyone in the stadium that we wanted to win this game – and that’s what we did. We were aggressive, powerful, hugely determined and carried out everything we set out to. We showed what we’re capable of with this team today.”
