She-Wolves out to extend lead

VfL Women are aiming to pull clear at the top of the Bundesliga table with victory over nearest challengers TSG 1899 Hoffenheim.

VfL Wolfsburg women’s team could hardly have wished for a more difficult start to the second half of the season. On Friday 14 February (kick-off 19:15 CET), the FLYERALARM Women’s Bundesliga leaders travel to second-placed TSG 1899 Hoffenheim in a top-of-the-table showdown.

The hosts trail the unbeaten She-Wolves by just three points, with their only defeat so far this season coming in the corresponding fixture in September. A brace from Pernille Harder and a further strike from Ewa Pajor earned the Green-and-Whites a comfortable 3-0 victory at the AOK Stadion.

Hoffenheim are expecting a record attendance at the Dietmar-Hopp-Stadion on Friday, with up to 2,000 supporters set to contribute to a red-hot atmosphere in Kraichgau.

“No title decider”

Head coach Stephan Lerch has played down suggestions that a She-Wolves victory would amount to a decisive blow in the race for the Bundesliga title. “If everything goes well, we’ll be particularly busy in the spring with a lot of midweek games,” said Lerch. “That’s why it’s important for us to extend our lead with a win in Hoffenheim. That’s exactly what we’ll try to do.”

Gunnarsdottir the only absentee

Lerch will only be without midfielder Sara Gunnarsdottir, who has yet to fully recover from a knee problem. The Icelandic player has already returned to light training, but the game against Hoffenheim comes too soon for the 29-year-old.
