VfL Wolfsburg Women's run of ten consecutive DFB Cup titles and 52 successive wins in the competition came to an end on Wednesday evening as the Green-and-Whites suffered a 1-0 quarter-final defeat at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim.
Ereleta Memeti scored the only goal of the game in the 52nd minute in a match in which the home side enjoyed the better start and created the better chances. The She-Wolves refused to give up though, and applied considerable pressure in the second half, albeit without carving out any clear-cut openings.
Tommy Stroot's charges will have to quickly put the disappointment behind them as they have another important fixture on Sunday, when they host Eintracht Frankfurt at the Volkswagen Arena on Matchday 15 of the Google Pixel Women's Bundesliga (kick-off 16:45 CET). Eintracht are currently three points better off than VfL, making this game potentially decisive in the context of the title race.
Goal
1-0 Memeti (52'): Hoffenheim get forward quickly on the counter following a VfL corner. Dominika Grabowska plays a ball forward for Memeti, who buries a shot into the far corner.
Tommy Stroot: "An incredible cup run has come to an end tonight. It hurts a lot and it's a very emotional moment for the whole team and for me as the coach. We weren't clinical enough with the few chances we had, and so we're all very disappointed."
