She-Wolves into quarter-finals

VfL Wolfsburg Women advanced to the DFB Cup quarter-finals thanks to a 4-1 win at 1. FSV Mainz.

VfL Wolfsburg Women took another step towards defending their DFB Cup crown after earning a 4-1 win over 1 FSV Mainz 05 in the round of 16 on Saturday evening. The 2,500 spectators at the Bruchwegstadion witnessed a surprisingly tense encounter in which the underdogs from Mainz took the lead, only for late goals from Sveindis Jonsdottir (86’, 90’+3), Lineth Beerensteyn (82’) and Fenna Kalma (90’) to give a far superior VfL side the win.

The quarter-final ties will be played between 11 and 13 February next year. Tommy Stroot’s side are next in action on Friday 6 December away to Bayer 04 Leverkusen (kick-off 18:30 CET).

Goals

  • 1-0 Bathmann (29’): Out of the blue, Mainz go in front! Following their first corner of the game, the ball is played back to Kara Bathmann from the byline and she fires in on the turn from inside the six-yard box.
  • 1-1 Beerensteyn (82’): Finally we get our equaliser! Lynn Wilms crosses from the right and it’s flicked on by Kalma towards the far post, where Beerensteyn sticks out a boot to score a richly deserved equaliser.
  • 1-2 Jonsdottir (86’): The She-Wolves show their class and turn the game on its head! Jonsdottir powers into the penalty area down the left and smashes the ball into the net to make it 2-1.
  • 1-3 Kalma (90’): Kalma adds to the scoreline before Mainz have any hope of fighting back, heading in from a left-wing cross.
  • 1-4 Jonsdottir (90’+3): Done and dusted. A corner is only half cleared and the Iceland international scores her second of the game to seal the win.

Tommy Stroot: “Mainz were very well organised and put up a good fight after scoring the opening goal. But we remained patient, created a lot of chances and after equalising we managed to put the game to bed in the closing stages.”
