She-Wolves ease into semi-finals

VfL Women beat Bremen 7-0 in the DFB Cup last eight.

VfL Wolfsburg Women have reached the DFB Cup semi-finals for a ninth time after overcoming SV Werder Bremen 7-0 in the quarter-finals on Saturday. Alexandra Popp hit a brace for the defending champions in the north-German derby, with further goals coming from Rebecka Blomqvist, Lena Oberdorf, Svenja Huth and Ewa Pajor, as well as an own goal from Bremen’s Franziska Jaser.

The She-Wolves will now meet a Bayern Munich side that is unbeaten so far this season in the last four, with the match set to be played on Easter Sunday (4 April). The Green-and-Whites’ next game, however, is on Wednesday 24 March, in their UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-final first leg against Chelsea (kick-off 17:00 CET).

“It’ll give us confidence for Chelsea”

VfL head coach Stephan Lerch: “We deserved to win, even by such a big margin. We were good in transition, and that’s also how we scored a couple of our goals. So, all in all, my verdict on the game is largely positive. The performance will give us confidence for the game against Chelsea on Wednesday. No disrespect to Werder, but that will be a different kind of match.”
