Schmadtke extends deal

Jörg Schmadtke has extended his contract until 31 January 2023.

Managing director for sport Jörg Schmadtke has agreed a seven-month extension to his contract at VfL Wolfsburg until 31 January 2023. “During the talks we agreed that, at the request of the supervisory board, I would be available to the club until the end of the next transfer period but one,” said Schmadtke. “We’ve made a number of changes at VfL in recent times and have also taken on one or two projects. I will now oversee this development for a bit longer and also continue to push forward the planning on the sporting front, together with Marcel Schäfer and our scouting department.”

“Setting the course for a successful future”

Supervisory board chairman Frank Witter emphasised: “I’m very happy that Jörg Schmadtke has put his personal plans to one side and that we’ll be continuing on this path together for a good while longer. Now it’s about consolidating structures during this period and setting the course for a successful future for VfL Wolfsburg.”

Schmadtke joined VfL as managing director for sport in July 2018. He brought former VfL player Schäfer back to the club from the USA to become sporting director, and the pair led the Wolves into the Europa League in their first season following two years in the relegation play-off. The following year, the Green-and-Whites finished seventh which earned them a place in Europa League qualifying, before achieving Champions League qualification with a fourth-place finish last term.
