Women

Safely through to semis

VfL Women won 3-0 at FSV Gütersloh 2009 in the DFB Cup quarter-finals.

VfL Wolfsburg Women have comfortably overcome the penultimate hurdle on the way to another DFB Cup final. Five days after their 4-0 success over 1. FC Köln in the FLYERALARM Women’s Bundesliga, the cup holders lived up their status as favourites with a 3-0 win at second-division side Gütersloh in the last eight. Two of the goals came from Lara Dickenmann, with Alexandra Popp netting the other.
The She-Wolves will face second-tier opposition again in the semi-finals on 10/11 June after Arminia Bielefeld pulled off a surprising 3-2 win over Bundesliga side SC Sand.

“Have to give the team credit”

VfL head coach Stephan Lerch: “We wanted to take another step after the win against Köln and I think we succeeded in that. The players approached the game with focus and eagerness from the first minute. I have to give the team credit for that, even if we didn’t always get the reward for creating good opportunities. We missed a lot of chances to make the scoreline even more comfortable. We also didn’t defend well from one or two long balls from them – that’s something for us to work on. However, the bottom line is that we’re through and we’re happy about that.”
