VfL Wolfsburg Women have completed another signing, with 20-year-old Swiss player Riola Xhemaili agreeing to move to the She-Wolves in the summer. Regarded as one of Switzerland’s biggest prospects, Xhemaili will join the club on a free transfer from SC Freiburg after signing a contract through to 2026. VfL have already confirmed the arrivals of Chantal Hagel, Anneke Borbe, Lisa Schmitz and Vivien Endemann for next season.

Xhemaili, who also has Kosovan citizenship, was just 15 when she made her Swiss Nationalliga A debut for FC Basel. After joining Freiburg in 2021, she has gone on to make 36 FLYERALARM Women’s Bundesliga appearances plus another four in the DFB Cup. She has also won 20 caps for her country and was brought on as a substitute in Switzerland’s final group game of EURO 2022.

“I’m going to learn a lot”

“I’m looking forward to the new challenge at VfL Wolfsburg,” said Xhemaili. “To play in the Champions League and compete for titles in the league and cup every season – that’s what every player dreams of. I want to settle into the team as quickly and as well as possible and play my part in helping us achieve success together. I also want to keep developing on a personal level and showcase my strengths. All in all, I’m definitely going to learn a lot at VfL.”

“Enthusiastic player and a good dribbler”

“Riola is a young and very talented player, who made a name for herself in Switzerland at an early age,” added Ralf Kellermann, VfL Women’s sporting director. “With her enthusiasm on the pitch and her dribbling abilities, she has the qualities to cause any defence problems. I’m really pleased that Riola sees her future at VfL Wolfsburg.”
