Riola Xhemaili pens extension

The Swiss midfielder will spend the coming campaign on loan in the Netherlands after committing to the She-Wolves until 2027.

Riola Xhemaili has committed her future to VfL Wolfsburg Women after the 21-year-old midfielder extended her contract, which was due to expire on 30 June 2026, by a further year until 2027. The Swiss international is set for a change of scenery this season, however, after agreeing to join PSV Eindhoven on loan for the duration of the 2024/25 campaign.

Xhemaili has made 12 Google Pixel Women’s Bundesliga outings and featured in two DFB Cup ties since joining the Green-and-Whites in summer 2023. She has also made 29 appearances for the Swiss national team.

More playing time before Swiss EURO

“It was clear to me that I needed more playing time [to feature] at next year’s European Championship on home soil, which I desperately want to be involved in,” said Xhemaili. “That’s why I was very pleased to receive the offer from Eindhoven. That said, I didn’t want to pass up the chance to extend my contract with a top club like Wolfsburg. That’s why I didn’t think twice. I was fully onboard with the idea from the beginning.”

“It was important for us to keep Riola”

Ralf Kellermann, director of women’s football at VfL Wolfsburg, said: “Riola approached us with a request to be given more match practice ahead of the European Championship in Switzerland, so we’re delighted to have found a good solution for everyone involved. It was very important to us that Riola extended her contract with VfL by another year. We still believe in her abilities and her potential, which is why she’s very much part of our plans after the Euro.”
