First Team

Positive starts

VfL’s internationals enjoyed some promising results in the first international fixtures.

Results were largely positive for the VfL representatives across the first round of matches of the international break, with five wins, a draw and just one defeat.

Baku inspires Germany U21s

Germany put in a strong second-half display to overcome host nation Hungary 3-0 in their opening UEFA U21 European Championship game on Wednesday. Ridle Baku was the standout player of the match, scoring two goals and creating the other.

Switzerland quick out of the blocks

Switzerland also got off to a strong start in their first FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 qualifier, earning a 3-1 triumph in Bulgaria in Group C. VfL right-back Kevin Mbabu played from start to finish, while Admir Mehmedi replaced Breel Embolo in the final minute.

Casteels unused, Brekalo a sub

Belgium won their first Group E qualifier with a 3-1 home victory over Wales. Koen Casteels did not feature. Josip Brekalo and Croatia had a rather more disappointing evening on Wednesday, as the favourites to top qualifying Group H slipped to a 1-0 defeat in Slovenia. Brekalo came off the bench in the 64th minute but was unable to prevent the 2018 World Cup runners-up from losing.
