Popp brilliance secures victory

VfL Women edged to a 1-0 win in Jena in the Google Pixel Women’s Bundesliga.

VfL Wolfsburg Women claimed their first league win of the season in their first away game at FC Carl Zeiss Jena on Saturday. The She-Wolves saw off the promoted side thanks to a smart strike from Alexandra Popp in the 68th minute at the new Jenaer Stadion – almost two months after a goalless draw in a friendly at the same venue.

The match kicked off a busy period for Tommy Stroot’s side, who are back in action on Wednesday 18 September (20:00 CEST/live on Wölfe TV) in the first leg of the second round of qualifying for the UEFA Women’s Champions League group stage at ACF Fiorentina.

Team news

Stroot made five changes from the team that started in the 6-0 win at Hertha BSC in the DFB Cup second round: Chantal Hagel, Fenna Kalma, Justine Kielland, Joelle Wedemeyer and Lynn Wilms made way for Lineth Beerensteyn, Lena Lattwein, Sarai Linder, Janina Minge and Popp. Minge started at centre-back for the first time this season.

Goal

  • 0-1 Popp (68‘): A stroke of genius from Popp! After a corner from substitute Wilms, the striker twists in the air and flicks the ball in at the near post.

Reaction

Tommy Stroot: “I thought we should’ve taken the lead much earlier. In the end, though, it was important that we scored the decisive goal and got the three points.”
