Striker Joelle Smits is leaving VfL Wolfsburg and joining PSV Eindhoven on 1 July 2022. The 22-year-old is thereby returning to her former club, where she played for two years before her move to Lower Saxony last year. Smits has signed a contract until 30 June 2025 with PSV, who finished third in the Dutch league last season, with her VfL contract – which was due to run until 2024 – being terminated by mutual consent.
Ralf Kellermann, VfL Women sporting director, explained: “We remain convinced by Joelle’s qualities and would’ve liked to have continued working with her. At the same time, we didn’t want to stand in the way of her wish to end the contractual relationship early in order to return to PSV Eindhoven. It was important to us that we found an acceptable solution for all parties, particularly in view of the financial conditions. We regret that Joelle is leaving us, but at the same time wish her all the best for her future.”
