“My goal was a good start”

Lukas Nmecha, VfL’s match-winner against Hertha last weekend, shares his thoughts ahead of the home game against Leipzig.

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s match at home to RB Leipzig (kick-off 17:30 CEST), summer signing Lukas Nmecha chats to us about the Matchday 3 encounter, his brother Felix and his aims for the campaign.

Lukas Nmecha, you spent half a season on loan with the Wolves in 2019. How does it feel to be starting your second chapter with VfL?

Lukas Nmecha: “From the beginning, I’ve felt really good being part of the team – as I did last time. Not being able to play wasn’t very nice last time out, so I hope to be given more playing time this season. My goal against Berlin to make it 2-1 was a good start.”

How happy are you that your younger brother Felix is now a Wolves player too?

Lukas: “That’s really nice. I’m with him every day. At the moment we’re still in a hotel, but we’re looking for an apartment together.”

You’re now top of the table and about to face a really top side in Leipzig. How confident are you of being able to keep RB at bay?

Lukas: “Leipzig are clearly a very strong team, but so are we. The signs all point to a good game and I’m looking forward to it. That’s exactly why I came here, to play in games at such a high level.”

Finally, what goals have you set yourself – both with the team and on a personal level?

Lukas: “I always set myself a few goals before each season, but I don’t reveal them until the end of the campaign. As far as the team is concerned, we qualified for the Champions League last time out. If we manage to do so again, it would obviously be a very big success.”
