Women

More than just a dress rehearsal

VfL Women’s next match in the FLYERALARM Women’s Bundesliga is away to Eintracht Frankfurt.

This coming Sunday (23 May, kick-off at 13:30 CEST), Wolfsburg Women, who currently sit second in the FLYERALARM Women’s Bundesliga, travel to Eintracht Frankfurt. Then just one week later, on 30 May (kick-off at 16:00 CEST), the two teams meet again in the DFB Cup final in Cologne.

For the She-Wolves at least, this weekend’s league match is far more than just a dress rehearsal, as a win would keep their slim title hopes alive until the final matchday of the season. Ahead of the match – which Alexandra Popp will have to sit out due to injury – head coach Stephan Lerch spoke about…

…the team’s aims: “We want to dominate, set the tone from the off and make it clear that we’re there to win the game. We want to maintain our title hopes, and that’s what our approach to the match is going to be. We won’t be making any tactical switches in terms of looking ahead to the DFB Cup final.”

…the opposition: “Frankfurt have been a mixed bag this season and are definitely below expectations in terms of the league. I don’t think that where they are currently in the table is what they would have been looking for. Despite that though, they are perfectly capable of outdoing themselves on a given day and making it tough for any opponent.”

…Eintracht’s situation: “It may well be that they have a think about things and maybe decide to rest a player or two ahead of the DFB Cup final. On the other hand, these players would then not have match sharpness so that might count against that argument. But at the end of the day, none of that is any concern of mine as VfL Wolfsburg coach.”
