A look back at the weekend’s international action: Several Wolves stars were on duty for their respective national teams on Saturday and Sunday. Koen Casteels and Dodi Lukebakio were unused substitutes as Belgium were beaten 2-1 by Italy in the UEFA Nations League third-place play-off, but Kevin Mbabu and Renato Steffen both started in Switzerland’s 2-0 World Cup qualifying victory over Northern Ireland – although Mbabu was forced off late in the game with a muscle problem. Wout Weghorst, meanwhile, made a cameo appearance in the Netherlands’ 1-0 win in Latvia, coming on in the 76th minute for his first outing under new national team head coach Louis van Gaal. Aster Vranckx, however, failed to make an appearance in Belgium U21s’ 2-0 win against Kazakhstan in UEFA European U21 Championship qualifying.
Milestone for Wedemeyer: Joelle Wedemeyer had a very special reason to celebrate the She-Wolves’ 3-0 win at home to 1. FC Köln. The VfL youth product, who joined the Green-and-Whites as an U17 player, made her 100th competitive appearance for the club in Sunday’s comfortable victory. Since making her debut in 2013, Wedemeyer has made 63 Bundesliga appearances as well as 14 in the DFB Cup and 23 in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
