VfL Wolfsburg have acquired Croatian international Lovro Majer from French Ligue 1 side Rennes, tying the attacking midfielder down to a long-term deal in the process. The 25-year-old has signed a five-year contract which will make him a Wolf through to 30 June 2028.

Majer, who has been given squad number 19 at VfL, was part of the Rennes team that kicked off their league campaign last Sunday with a 5-1 win over Metz. He made 62 Ligue 1 appearances in total for the French side, twice helping them qualify for the Europa League and scoring eight goals.

“Even more options in midfield”

“It’s no secret that Lovro has been high on our list for a while now,” said VfL sporting director Sebastian Schindzielorz. “He is a creative, technically very gifted player who has proved his worth over the past two years in France. He also has plenty of experience on the European stage, having played in the Europa League with Rennes and the Champions League with Dinamo Zagreb, which makes us all the more pleased to have worked out a deal to bring him here to Wolfsburg. Lovro will now give us even more options in midfield – he can operate in the centre but is also a good player to have on the flanks.”

“Finally kick things off“

“I’m really happy that my transfer to Wolfsburg and the Bundesliga has worked out, and I can hardly wait to finally kick things off,” said Majer. “I’m really looking forward to working with my new teammates as well as Niko Kovac and his coaching staff. I want to help the team, give my best and help us to achieve our goals.”

22 caps and counting

Before moving to France in 2021, Majer played in his native Croatia for Dinamo Zagreb and Lokomotiva Zagreb, making 241 appearances in total for the two clubs from the capital, scoring 46 goals. He worked his way up from his country’s U18 team to the senior side, for whom he made his debut in 2017 and was selected in the 2022 World Cup squad. To date, he has won 22 caps for Croatia, bagging four goals. He has played 14 matches in the Champions League including the qualifying rounds, scoring twice, with another 20 Europa League appearances (three goals).

Majer is the seventh new player that the Green-and-Whites have signed prior to the 2023/24 season, after Cedric Zesiger, Moritz Jenz, Vaclav Cerny, Tiago Tomas, Rogerio and Joakim Maehle.
