“Looking forward to the atmosphere”

VfL head coach Mark van Bommel looks ahead to the away game at Union Berlin.

The Wolves’ first Bundesliga match after the international break is a trip to Union Berlin on Saturday 16 October (kick-off 15:30 CEST). The hosts are unbeaten at the Stadion an der Alten Försterei in 20 league matches in a run stretching back to the opening day of last season, but they have not won any of their past four top-flight meetings with the Green-and-Whites. After three league games without a win, VfL are determined to extend their unbeaten run against Union this weekend.

At Thursday’s press conference ahead of the game, Wolves boss Mark van Bommel answered the media’s questions on…

…VfL’s opponents: “Union are a team built on cohesion. They don’t have many top individuals, but Max Kruse is an outstanding player who can make a difference in any side. Overall, they’re a team who are hard to beat because they perform as a unit. I’m looking forward to the match and the atmosphere in the stadium. You play football to get the best out of yourself in that atmosphere.”

…the Wolves’ goalscoring threat: “We’re in third place in the possession stats, which is good. It’s just the last bit that isn’t quite right yet. We often get into the final third, but we only create few clear-cut opportunities. We need to make better use of those chances. The next step we have to take is to be dominant and create chances in order to score more goals – that’s our challenge.”

…personnel: “Yannick Gerhardt won’t be fit in time for the game in Berlin. The bruise on his foot hasn’t healed yet – that could still take a while. Some of the lads have also returned from their national teams with minor injuries, but otherwise it looks pretty good – apart from our long-term absentees. Maxence Lacroix is missing through suspension.”
