Lena Oberdorf signs contract extension

Big statement made by VfL Women ahead of Women’s EURO.

Lena Oberdorf has established herself as one of VfL Women’s key players, and will be for at least another three years after the midfielder – who starts the Women’s EURO 2022 campaign with Germany on Friday – added an extra year to her contract with last season’s double winners.

The 20-year-old’s deal was set to expire in 2024, but the new agreement will tie her to the club she joined from SGS Essen in 2020 until 30 June 2025. Oberdorf has made 37 FLYERALARM Women’s Bundesliga appearances for Wolfsburg, as well as another nine in the DFB Cup and 15 in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

“Nowhere near having achieved our full potential“

“My aim is to be an integral part of VfL Wolfsburg’s future in the long term,” said Oberdorf. “As such, I didn’t have to think long about signing for an extra year. Even if we did win two trophies last season, we’re nowhere near having achieved our full potential. I really enjoy working with this squad and coaching staff, and I’m looking forward to everything that lies ahead over the coming years.”

Clear commitment to VfL

“It’s hard to believe how far Lena has come at the age of just 20 – she’s already almost the complete footballer on the pitch, as well as being a leader who takes on responsibility, never shies away and is always looking forward,” said Ralf Kellermann, sporting director of VfL Women. “Lena would be a real asset to any team in the world and that’s why we’re so proud that she has made such a clear commitment to VfL Wolfsburg with this early contract extension. It sends a strong message in terms of our planning for the future as well as being great news for the FLYERALARM Women’s Bundesliga as a whole!“
