VfL Wolfsburg Women not only maintained their perfect start to the season but increased their lead at the top of the FLYERALARM Women’s Bundesliga table to four points after a 3-2 triumph away to SV Werder Bremen. Rebecka Blomqvist struck twice for the She-Wolves, with Alexandra Popp also on target, while Rieke Dieckmann and Christin Meyer replied for Bremen. Second-placed Eintracht Frankfurt were held to a 3-3 draw in Hoffenheim but remain one point ahead of Bayern Munich in third. After a busy fortnight with fixtures in midweek and at the weekends, the Green-and-Whites now have a little more time to prepare for their final game before the international break: Tommy Stroot’s side are next in action on Sunday 6 November (kick-off: 13:00 CET/live on Magenta Sport) against MSV Duisburg at the AOK Stadion.
Goals
0-1 Blomqvist (11th minute): Lynn Wilms plays a well-timed ball forward to Blomqvist, who controls it nicely and finishes with aplomb.
0-2 Popp (25th minute): Svenja Huth takes a short corner to Felicitas Rauch, whose cross is inch-perfect for Popp to head home.
1-2 Dieckmann (31st minute): Michaela Brandenburg crosses from the right into the middle, where Dieckmann scores on the turn.
1-3 Blomqvist (48th minute): Huth delivers a ball into the middle from the right and finds Blomqvist, whose header makes it 3-1.
2-3 Meyer (72nd minute): A cross falls kindly at the feet of Meyer, who fires in at the bottom-left corner.
Reaction
Tommy Stroot: “I’m not pleased with our performance today. We had moments during the match in which we were in control and could have finished the game off. That frustrates me and I know the girls feel the same. We didn’t put the game to bed in the decisive phases and then we had to endure a nervy spell. At the end of the day, I’m just happy that we won.”
