VfL Wolfsburg Women collected a significant point in the Google Pixel Women’s Bundesliga on Sunday afternoon. The She-Wolves, under the guidance of Sabrina Eckhoff, played out a 1-1 draw away at SC Freiburg. The Green-and-Whites were heading for victory after Joelle Wedemeyer’s goal in the 72nd minute in front of a crowd of 4,562 at the Dreisamstadion, but conceded an equaliser just before full time through Annabel Schasching.
Up to second place
Since Eintracht Frankfurt were beaten 3-0 by Bayern Munich on Saturday, VfL move back into an automatic Champions League spot for the first time since Matchday 10 and now go into the remaining three league games of the season in second place.
Next up: Hoffenheim
VfL Women’s next outing comes on Monday 28 April (kick-off 18:00 CEST), when TSG Hoffenheim visit the AOK Stadion.
Goals
0-1 Wedemeyer (72’): The sub strikes! When the VfL defender crosses towards the penalty area from the left flank, the ball keeps travelling and suddenly lands in the net behind the dumbfounded Freiburg ’keeper. It may not have been intended, but it’s still fully deserved.
1-1 Schasching (89’): Freiburg equalise with their first proper shot of the second half. Nia Szenk crosses from the right to Schasching, who’s left completely unmarked to find the net. That really shouldn’t have happened.
Sabrina Eckhoff: “It was an attractive game for the fans. We didn’t make enough of the good chances we had, and Freiburg punished us for that with the late equaliser.”
