Important home win

The Wolves beat Hoffenheim 2-1 to keep their charge for European qualification on course.

VfL-Wolfsburg-Spieler Jakub Kaminski breitet die Arme aus und läuft jubelnd über den Platz.

VfL Wolfsburg have put themselves in a strong position to qualify for Europe next season after overcoming TSG Hoffenheim 2-1 at home on Bundesliga Matchday 32. Jakub Kaminski (15’) and Luca Waldschmidt (75’) were on the scoresheet for Niko Kovac’s side in front of 22,617 fans at the Volkswagen Arena, with a Josuha Guilavogui own goal in stoppage time (90’+3) coming too late for the visitors to salvage a point.

The result – the Wolves’ 13th league victory this season – lifts the team up to sixth in the standings ahead of the Sunday fixtures, increasing the gap to eighth place to three points.

Goals

  • 1-0 Kaminski (15’): Football can be so simple sometimes. Following a throw-in, Jonas Wind touches the ball back to Ridle Baku, whose cross into the middle is headed over the line by Kaminski.

  • 2-0 Waldschmidt (75’): Felix Nmecha plays an exquisite dink over the visiting defence for Waldschmidt, who keeps his composure and guides the ball past Oliver Baumann and into the far corner.

  • 2-1 Guilavogui (own goal, 90’+3): Hoffenheim go on the attack as the final whistle approaches and as Guilavogui sticks out a foot in an attempt to clear a cross, he inadvertently diverts the ball into his own net.

Coaches’ reaction

Niko Kovac: “We’re fortunate to get the win today. We didn’t play the way we wanted to, even if we did score two nice goals. Hoffenheim played well, pressed us high and didn’t let us get into our rhythm. We couldn’t find a way to escape their pressing. I can fully understand Hoffenheim being upset today, they could have got more from the game. Having said that, we’re happy and pleased that we got the win.”

Pellegrino Matarazzo: “This feels like a defeat that shouldn’t have happened. I think we had a decent game. Wolfsburg scored two goals even though they didn’t have many chances, and we weren’t sharp enough with our own opportunities in front of goal. There were a lot of dead-ball situations that could have panned out differently. It would do us good to win a game like that 1-0 through a set-piece goal. Unfortunately we didn’t manage that, which is why it feels very disappointing.”
