She’s always a ray of sunshine anyway, but Rebecka Blomqvist is beaming even more than usual at the moment. The VfL Wolfsburg Women forward returned to the team for the start of the training camp as a bronze medal winner at the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand and with a new contract with the She-Wolves. From the camp, she tells us about her best moments at the World Cup and why she’s staying in Wolfsburg.
Pride tinged with disappointment
It’s around two weeks since the World Cup ended for Sweden, and Blomqvist has “mixed feelings” looking back: “We’re very proud of our performance, although obviously the semi-final defeat to Spain still hurts a bit. But the way we then played against Australia to get third place makes me very proud.”
Lasting memories
Blomqvist played the role of the super-sub during the tournament, scoring three times in 163 minutes of action. “I’m pleased with my performance,” said the 26-year-old. “I played more than at previous tournaments and it was nice to score a few goals and help the team. When I see the images of the penalty shootout against USA, I still get goosebumps.”
Now the focus for Blomqvist, who renewed her contract in July, is back on Wolfsburg. “I’m very happy that I’m still here and can’t imagine being anywhere else right now. I’m really looking forward to the new season,” emphasised the striker. In particular she appreciates the family feel and the excellent sporting facilities at VfL. In the forthcoming campaign, the Swede wants to “play as much as possible, score goals and in doing so help the side”. She also has ambitious aims with the She-Wolves: “We’re Wolfsburg and we’re good enough to compete for titles – for all three.”
